The following looks at how perfectionism is linked to fear, anxiety, and panic disorder. What Is Perfectionism? In basic terms, perfectionism is the desire to be a perfect person. Perfectionism involves exceedingly high standards that one sets out to achieve, the desire to be accepted by others, and the need to succeed at all costs. Considered a personality trait, a “perfectionist” is a person who yearns to be flawless in all that she does. There are both positive and negative consequences of perfectionism. On the encouraging side, perfectionism can be a motivating factor in achieving your goals, practicing self-improvement, giving tasks your best, and trying harder in future endeavors. People who use perfectionism in a positive way are often achievement focused and driven, which can help in reaching many aspirations in life.? Perfectionism and Panic Disorder Many people struggle with the negative aspects of perfectionism, and people with anxiety disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder, may be even more prone to issues of perfectionism. Having unrealistic expectations about the self can contribute to increased feelings of anxiety, dissatisfaction, and difficulty coping with symptoms. Perfectionism is usually the result of trying to live up to an internal ideal, but it can also be motivated by fear, such as worrying about how others perceive you. For a person with panic disorder, this may translate into distress about your symptoms, which you may view as shortcomings by which others negatively evaluate you. These beliefs and self-doubts can contribute to avoidance behaviors, loneliness and isolation, and even depression. Perfectionism is often associated with negative thinking. Description of Services and Equipment Expansion of Computer Lab One of the projects in the upgrading of HUB-Robeson Center at Penn State is the expansion of the current computer lab so that it can accommodate more students. It has been identified by the members of the student union that due to the central location of the computer lab, it is used by a large number of students. Especially during the day time, the computer lab is always overcrowded. If the arrangement of the computer tables in the computer lab is changed, it can accommodate 25 more computer tables. This means that no physical expansion of the computer lab is needed. Also, by adding 25 more computers to the computer lab, the wait times for the computer lab will be drastically decreased as we observed that at a single time in the day, around 20-25 people are waiting for a computer. Construction of a New Hall Over the years, the number of student societies has increased at Penn State. More number of student societies mean that more number of organized events for the students, which is good. Many of the events planned by the student societies are delayed or cancelled due to the unavailability of the auditorium at the HUB. While some societies use large lecture halls to conduct an event, that is not the best practice. A construction of a new hall dedicated to the organization of events planned by student societies will solve the issue. Furthermore, as more events would be held at Penn State, the students will get a chance to involve themselves in more social activities. As a result, the social life of students will improve and they will get to learn a lot more. Construction of New Rooms for Student Societies It has been discussed in the previous paragraphs that the number of student societies at Penn State have increased over the last few years. These student societies play an important role in grooming the students of Penn State as they provide the students with a chance to participate in a lot of extracurricular activities. This not only enhances the social life of the students but also grooms them by providing them with the opportunities to nourish their skills. Many of the student societies do not have offices and they use lecture rooms as makeshift offices. If the student societies are provided with proper offices, they would be able to work in a much better manner and consequently provide the students of Penn State with the best opportunities to groom themselves. Plan for Purchase of Computers The computer lab at the HUB is currently equipped with laptops made by Dell. They were installed a few years ago and they have become slow as their compatibility with new software has decreased. Since it is very difficult to upgrade the laptops, it is recommended that Penn State purchases desktops instead of laptops from now on. They are easier to upgrade and have a longer life than the laptops. Considering the fact that all other laptops in the computer lab are made by Dell, the student union recommends that Dell desktops be bought as the tech team at Penn State is already familiar with Dell products and they will not have any trouble in maintaining the new products. A Dell Inspiron 3650 Desktop with 6th Gen Intel Core i-5 processor would serve the needs of the students in an adequate manner. Plan for Construction of Hall and New Rooms As far as the construction of a new hall is concerned, it can be constructed in the lawn adjacent to the auditorium. The lawn is quite large and if the hall takes up some space, it will not make much of a difference. This new hall will be constructed by keeping in mind the Green design of the building and the south side of the hall will be made such that it uses daylight during the day time. For the new rooms for student societies, it is recommended that a large hall is constructed first and then small offices are made by using glass or other appropriate material as a separator. The design would look similar to the cubicles at corporate offices. Timeline for the Project A timeline is proposed for upgrading the HUB while keeping in view the semester dates. A Study of Anti-Semitism in The Merchant of Venice ‘The Merchant of Venice’ was written by Shakespeare in 1596 and appeals to both audiences of comedy and tragedy. The play features anti-Semitism which is a response to 1500’s Britain as well as other literature of the time. Anti-Semitism is the term used to describe discrimination towards Jews and Judaism. ‘The Merchant of Venice’ has received both positive and negative comments over the centuries and throughout this essay I will look at some of these. The two main influences are ‘The Jew of Malta’ written by Christopher Marlowe and ‘Il Pecorone’ written by Giovanni Fiorentino. ‘The Jew of Malta’ is very similar to ‘The Merchant of Venice.’ The Jew is called Barabas and he poisons the nuns when his daughter runs away and becomes a nun. The main themes of ‘The Jew of Malta’ are racial tensions, religious conflict and political unrest which are very similar to the themes of ‘The Merchant of Venice’. Barabas is a stereotypical Jew of the time because he is hated, violent and cruel. One of the main differences between the two plays is that Shakespeare’s Jew, Shylock, is more of a man than Barabas bec ause Shylock did not kill people. The plot to ‘Il Pecorone’ is the same as ‘The Merchant of Venice’ and Shylock is based upon the Jew from ‘Il Pecorone’. Critical Analysis of Poes The Tell Tale Heart The Tell Tale Heart is a story, on the most basic level, of conflict. There is a mental conflict within the narrator himself (assuming the narrator is male). Through obvious clues and statements, Poe alerts the reader to the mental state of the narrator, which is insanity. The insanity is described as an obsession (with the old mans eye), which in turn leads to loss of control and eventually results in violence. Ultimately, the narrator tells his story of killing his housemate. Although the narrator seems to be blatantly insane, and thinks he has freedom from guilt, the feeling of guilt over the murder is too overwhelming to bear. The narrator cannot tolerate it and eventually†¦show more content†¦One statement by the narrator sums up his mental state: You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me; (777). What he is actually saying is: There are madmen who are clumsy in their actions, but not this madman!; This is as close to a self-admission of insanity as possible. The mental setting is put into place by the narrators own statements. This setting is pure chaos starting in the head of the killer and spilling out into the physical world around him resulting in an unnecessary death. When the narrator is explaining the end of his tale to the unnamed listener (presumably a jailor, or a mental health practitioner), he states the beating of the heart was unbearable on his conscious: I paced the floor to and fro with heavy strides, as if excited by the observations of the men-but the noise steadily increased?I foamed- I raved-I swore!?the noise arose over all and continually increased. Hamlet: Masks We Wear Essay MasksA mask is a covering worn on the face or something that disguises or conceals oneself. All the characters in Shakespeares Hamlet hide behind masks to cover up who they really are, which contridictes a main idea, expressed by the fool, Old Polonius, To thine ownself be true (Polonius 1.3. 84). All the characters share strengths and triumphs, flaws and downfalls. Instead of revealing their vulnerabilities, each of them wears a mask that conceals who they are and there true convictions. The masks brought about feelings such as fear, hatred, insanity, indecisiveness, ambitiousness, and vengeance all of which contribute to the tragic ending of the play. Shakespeare reveals the idea of the masks in the first lines of the play, Whos there (Barnardo 1.1.1). Nay, answer me. Stand and unfold yourself (Fransisco 1.1.2). These masks are upon each character, placed there by either society, self-ignorance, or guilt. Ophelia, Polonius daughter and Hamlets lover, hid behind a mask, just like Queen Gertrudes. It was, according to the society and the culture of the time, in the best interest of the woman to display a passive behavior for their personal preservation, which served as Gertrudes mask. Gertrude was brought up to believe that when a woman protests her innocence, in any matter, too much then people will begin to think otherwise. Gertrude revealed the idea of her mask, when responding to Hamlet inquiry of her likes to the play, her response was a bold reply, The lady doth protest too much methinks (Gertrude 3. 2.254), while viewing The Murder of Ganzago. Hamlets disgust with his mothers lack of strength, in regards to Claudius sexual temptations, was evident in his soliloquy, after Gertrude begged him to stay with her and Claudius in Elsinore. And yet, with a month let me not think on t; fratility, thy name is woman. (Hamlet 1.2.149-50) Gertrudes submissiveness is also evident in her refusal to face the pain of the true nature of her husbands murder. Gertrude begs O Hamlet, speak no more! / Thou turnst my eyes into my very soul, / And there I see such black and grained spots / As will not leave their tinct (Gertrude 3. 4.99-103). In relation to Gertrude, Ophelia is even weaker and more passive. This is obscure to the audience until, her confrontation with Hamlet, set up by Claudius and Polonius to determine whether it was Polonius refusal to allow her to see Hamlet that made him crazy. It was during this confrontation that Hamlet openly spurned and rejected her, leaving her no place to turn except to herself. Ophelia is rendered ineffectual regarding the loss of her father because she can not take revenge against her lover, Hamlet, who is also her fathers murderer. After her fathers murder by Hamlet, her true love, two of the three men she loved most were forever lost and the third in some far off country, Ophelia could no longer find any sense of security, and without security her sanity would be nowhere found. The masks created by society for Ophelia and Gertrude resulted in the tragic endings for both of them, Gertrude by the hand of her husband, Claudius, and Ophelia, by the loss of her loved ones. Self-ignoranceis the laking knowledge or comprehention of ones own self, and therfore the self-ignorance of Rosencranz and Guildenstern, allowed for the King to coax them into betraying their good friend Hamlet, by posing as a spy for the King. Upon the arrival of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Hamlet welcomed his friends but became suspicious about their reasons for visiting. After Hamlet asked them three times for their business with Hamlet, and received lines such as, To visit you, my lord, no other reason. The numbers for children in Wisconsin are 16. 5 percent that are overweight and 14. 4 are obese. These children are at risk to developing serious medical conditions including physiological problems. The main and most commonly known disease is, Juvenile type two diabetes. This is caused from overweight and in-active children. Which can lead to heart disease and co-morbidities; â€Å"Children with type 2 diabetes also are at risk for the long-term complications of diabetes and the co-morbidities associated with insulin resistance (lipid abnormalities and hypertension). † (CDC 2011) Children are supposed to be safe, educated and cared for in schools. The national diabetes education program ensures that every student is made sure to succeed with their diabetes. (NDEP 2012) â€Å"NDEP’s Guide for School Personnel educates and informs school personnel about diabetes, how it is managed, and how each member of the school staff can help meet the eeds of students with the disease. †(NDEP 2012) Every obese and overweight child have a higher chance of getting type two diabetes. These children need to have preventable measures taken, so they don’t develop diabetes. Schools need to focus on health problems the same as any other type of disease or problem the child may have. Psychological pr oblems are also linked with obesity in children. Obese kids are more likely to have social and psychological problems, such as depression, which in turn makes them have poor self-image leading to bullying other kids, and even suicide. Emotional problems in obese kids is one of the most painful things to experience. Getting made fun of in school along with being alienated by other children causes these obese children to live a sedentary lifestyle. Meaning they feel out of place and withdrawn from everything, making their life growing up very hard. These high risk disease and emotional complications attributed to children being overweight and obese should motivate Milwaukee Public School System to change the way physical education is run. If parents would take the chance to speak with one another things could really come together and change will become of this. Currently in Milwaukee, there can be better efforts in school systems as well as educating the public on the importance of keep their children at a good and healthy weight. By keeping the public more informed on ways ‘How to’, so to speak, keep their children healthy and active we could change these statistics of Wisconsin. In Wisconsin alone, according to the Department of Health and Human Services, 29% of children ages 2 through 4 in the state are overweight or obese. One in four Wisconsin high school students are considered overweight. The obese rates children ages two to four is 13. % and the overweight is 16. 1% SFTA (2012) An idea that should be put in place is the absolute need for children to stay active. We need to change how schools teach physical education. â€Å"The American Heart Association recommends at least sixty minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. † (American Heart Association 2012) We need to get our future physically ac tive. We can make change for them along with our future generations. I know that budget cuts are put in place especially for school funding but why cut out physical education? It is a necessity for children to stay fit and active because they have a lesser chance of developing life threatening diseases such as heart disease or diabetes. Lastly, what needs to be done is thoroughly educating parents on healthier eating habits, not using the television as a mere â€Å"babysitter†, getting active with their children and cutting back on sugary foods. Respectfully, Kristy Zamora Reflection Piece What I learned about myself as a writer is that my ideas seem great but to actually get them down on paper and stringing them together is a lot harder than it seems. Myself as a thinker is that my ideas are sort of jumpy and sporadic. I try and think of ways to be a better thinker and not just throw a bunch of ideas together. What I learned about the writing process is that it takes more than one draft and even more than one outline. In order to achieve and write a great paper it really does take a lot of practice. It is hard to put ideas together and be clearer of what I’m trying to say in my papers. The skills I attained from College Composition II are writing better in APA format and making an outline for every paper. APA format will help me because I will be attending college for three more years and that is what my papers will have to be in. Outlines I will use the rest of my college career because that is the beginning and start of every paper I will write. What I learned from my peers is that everyone is different, in learning styles and techniques to writing papers. What works for one may not work for another. I sort of fused together a couple people’s ideas with writing an outline and getting the paper together and it seems to work for me. My instructor had the most valuable feedback. My classmates didn’t really have much to say about my style of writing and also didn’t have much to say about revising and editing my paper. They gave me feedback on my pamphlet but the only thing they talked about was color in it. Some said keep the colors and some said keep the colors the same. So I had mixed reviews on that part. My instructor had a good way of explaining that my paper needed a lot of work. Not only by editing the grammatical errors, comma splice, sentence fragments and correcting paragraphs that didn’t make sense. I tried my hardest to fix may paper and get the point across of my big idea.
